“Local NWTF Makes The Best Of The Cold”
It may not have seemed like it but the temperature was pretty nice this past Saturday if you were at Loss Lake and in one of the many ice shacks set up for area youth. For the second consecutive year the Central Valley Struttin’ Gobblers, a local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, held an ice fishing for area youth.
The fishing proved to be much better this year even though it was tough to find a keeper. While being finished with all the necessary gear 28 kids ranging from age 3 to 13 were able to enjoy complimentary hot dogs, chips & hot chocolate. Besides for landing an occasional Perch or Bullhead participants also enjoyed a prize give-away.
This is one of many Youth events, also known as Jakes, held around the state by local NWTF chapters. Recently the Fall River Chapter of Hot Springs won a national award for the best Jakes event in the country. The CVSG hopes to continue being active throughout the year by participating in Jamboree Days in June and holding a Women In The Outdoors event in September.
A special thanks goes to the Dakota Angler bait shop of Sioux Falls for contributing a large portion of the materials required to conduct the day. If you are an outdoor enthusiast and would like to be part of the Central Valley Struttin’ Gobblers please feel free to contact President Paul Stark at 605-940-5444.
