Local Conservationist take to the Fields

Members of the Central Valley Struttin’ Gobblers (a local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation or NWTF) were recently awarded a national grant designed for habitat enhancement.  Over 200 Ponderosa pine trees were planted just south of Hartford, near Wall Lake.  Numerous species of wildlife are expected to benefit from the habitat which will be generated for many years to come.

The CVSG was the only chapter in the state of South Dakota which qualified for what is known as the national Big Sky Program.  The Big Sky program is supported by membership fees and annual NWTF banquets.  The Hartford – Humboldt area banquet will take place January 26th, 2008 at the Humboldt Community Center.

Volunteer planted the shelter belt which will also protect a nearby food plot.  The combination of these elements are forecasted to decrease depredation and decease amongst deer and other native wildlife.  Maintenance of the trees will continue throughout the summer and fall.

The NWTF is the fastest growing conservation organization in the country with over a half million members and 2,200 local chapters.  South Dakota has also experienced this growth with more than 4,900 state members and an increase of over 15 chapters in the past decade.  To find out more about the Central Valley Struttin’ Gobblers please feel free to call President Paul Stark at 605-940-5444.
